Mumbai shuts everything down and says “Don’t Panic”

The H1N1 virus prompted authorities in Mumbai to close schools, colleges and movie theaters on August 13, 2009. The gathering places were closed after three people died from the swine flu in the city. By August 14, 2009, 20 people were confirmed to have died from the swine flu in India, most of the deaths were in the city of Pune. Authorities urged people not to panic and said the closures were “a prevention measure.”

Authorities in India warned against panic and advice people against stocking up on swine flu mask and crowding hospitals. Schools, malls and movie theaters were closed to try and prevent a major outbreak of the H1N1 virus. The first person to die of the swine flu in India was a 14-year-old girl on August 3rd. By August 14, a total of 20 people had died. The total population of India is about 1.2 billion.
